November 2007

Al Smith - Greater Fresno Area Chamber of Commerce - Progress and Priorities of the Greater Fresno Area Chamber of Commerce

Al Smith spent 47 years in the radio and television business prior to retiring in 2004. His experience in broadcasting included participation in almost all areas of the industry. He started as an announcer and disc jockey at the age of 18, then moved into sales and finally management in the early 60’s.

His nomadic career took him to Louisiana , Texas , Kentucky , Georgia and Tennessee . He moved to the West Coast in 1986 settling in Southern California ..and then elected to move to Fresno in 1988.

From that time until retirement, he served as Senior Vice-President and Market Manager for CBS Radio, which owns and operated seven radio stations in Fresno .

Our speaker has always been heavily involved in Fresno . Part of these efforts resulted in him serving as an officer or board member of the California Association of Broadcasters, the Fresno Radio Area Group, The Fresno Convention & Visitors Bureau; the Fresno Philharmonic; and the Downtown Rotary Club.

Today, he comes to us as President and CEO of the 1,955 member Greater Fresno Area Chamber of Commerce.

Many may know him because of his involvement in a local radio program called “Legends and Legacies”, which he created and runs 10 times per week on KMJ radio. He, along with his associate Cathy Rehart, has been responsible for 6 best selling books – Legends and Legacies, Volumes 1 through 6.

He is married to Janette Smith and has four children, two living here in Fresno and two living in New Orleans; and has nine grand-children.

"Get ready for another great speaker"

Here what others say about FCWCC:

I would like to thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak at your recent meeting.  The FCWCC audience is very knowledgeable and responsive.  From a speaker’s perspective, it is highly enjoyable presenting at your meetings.

John Savrnoch - Assistant District Attorney County of Fresno

Thank you so much for your hard work in organizing the How to Write a Business Plan Seminar last week. Please pass along my thanks to Sharon as well for her wonderful work in facilitating the meeting and directing the discussion. I thought the class size was just right because we were able to dialogue and learn from one another as well as from Sharon. There was a lot of conversation and input from around the table which really added to my understanding. The handouts were perfect. I am able to really go through them for assistance in putting my own plan in place. I feel empowered to do this now. It doesn’t seem like a daunting thing at all – but a very wise, and savvy way to keep track of our current and future growth plans. Thank you again. These seminars put on by the Women’s Chamber are now at the top of my list of things to make sure to put in my calendar. I appreciated the time of this one too – a lunchtime meeting works very well for my schedule! And we started on time and ended on time!!

Way to go, Sandy and Sharon!
